CHORD SUBSTITUTIONS

Chord substitution refers to the art of changing and/or adding chords to a progression in order to create harmony that is different and more interesting. The general chord substitution rule holds that chords that share two or more notes in common can be readily substituted for each other. Substitutions that share two or more notes in common are referred to as a common tone substitution. Any chord substitution must sound good and your ear is always the final arbiter of acceptability.

How to play blues - 1

The roots of jazz and most other popular music grow deep within the blues tradition. When Africans were kidnapped and brought here to be sold as slaves, they were accompanied by a deep heritige where music and rhythm were fundamental to life in their society. A small, simplistic five note scale that didn't even fit into western tonality found itself as the seed of almost everything we hear.

The blues is something you should know in all twelve keys because the blues IS the cornerstone of jazz. Knowing the blues in 12 keys is such a universal jazz law that people don't even have to mention it.

The Blues Scale

The blues scale, shown here in the key of F, is a rather simple scale, encompassing all of five notes.

Some people might add what is often called the "blues" note, and it would be the B natural in the following example.

This "blues" note is our attempt at playing a note that doesn't exactly fit into western tonality. It lies somewhere between the 4th and the flat 5th. Africans didn't know about western tonality back in the 1700's, so they didn't consider that anything might have been wrong with their music (thank goodness!)

Blues Chords

Before we go on to a simple blues form, you need to know what to do when you see a chord symbol. When you play these examples, try to learn these chords in all the keys. It may take a while, but learning in all the keys is important. Keep in mind that the chord voicings are not set in stone- if you come up with something on your own that you like better, learn it in all the keys and then use it! For this lesson we will be keeping out examples in the key of F blues. The chord is F7, Bb7, C7

Blues Song

Now let's play a simple blues song. The tune below shows the usage of the blues scale as well as another very important aspect of the blues - call and response. You will notice that for the first four bars, a melody is played. In the second four bars, the melody is repeated. In the last four bars, there is something else, a response. For more information on this style, you need to listen to some of the old blues guitar masters from the early part of the century. I will try to get some links in here soon for you to check them out.

One other thing that you will notice when you listen to the midi file is that the notes are "swung". That means that eighth notes are not played as literally as they are written. If you want to think about swing as being notated, the closest you can come is by writing triplets and then tying the first two (which is how I notated the music to get the illusion of "swing" for the midi file). But, it's better just to "feel" swing rather than trying to think logically about it. We'll get into swing more later on.

Try to learn this blues song, and then maybe learn it in C and Bb. Ultimately you'd want to know how to play it in all the keys. In the next lesson we'll explore more blues including a more jazzy sounding blues form with some different chord changes.

The metaphor is that of a jazz ensemble. To increase awareness of the energy and where it is going, ask what type of jam session have you gathered to experience? Avant-garde jazz, cool jazz, hard bop, electric, or free form exploration? Are you cutting a record, so that you need a defined outcome? Or are you jamming for the sake of creation? Ask "what is the desired outcome?" and then just head there.

Dance in the moment

Jazz happens in real time. It flows, it’s in the moment. It's about grace and spontaneity. Even if you're playing a familiar tune, things happen.

Share your gifts

Each player brings their instrument, their skills, their passion and their music. Great players share all of who they are.

Listen for the backbeat

A jazz ensemble stays in synch with each other by listening to the rhythm and the melody. Stay in touch with each other by listening to your intuition.

Challenge the boundaries

Aim for the highest possibility. Push the envelope and allow it to happen.

STEPS TO PLAY PIANO

1. Pianos can be very expensive so if you can't afford to buy one, Keyboards are an excellent alternative for beginers to save money. If you can afford a piano, there are several criteria you should consider before buying yourself a piano. Before buying a piano, make certain your are willing to practice thirty or more minutes each day. If you're not--then save the expense of buying the piano and books or lessons.
2. Arrange for music lessons or buy a lesson book. Look for a teacher or book who is in the National Teachers Association, has other trustable accreditations, or is otherwise known to be dependable. Ask other piano students about their books or who their teachers are--and whether they are "good." Ask "why" other students think their teacher or book is a good teacher or book because sometimes a student likes his or her teacher for the wrong reasons. For example, if your friend likes his/her resource because "he/she/the book doesn't make me work very hard," steer away from that source.
3. Make certain your teacher or lesson book is including time spent learning chords, theory, and improvisation, not just learning pieces by note. Understand that in learning the piano, you are also learning the language and history of music. It takes time and effort to learn this "foreign language" and musical understanding means more than just playing a few pieces well. True mastery of music is a lifelong process. It takes many years to become a good musician.
4. Practice every day for at least thirty minutes or more. Your fingers will "rust" if you do not play for even a week. At first, practicing might be a pain and you might get very frustrated. As your skills grow, you will become facile and playing piano will become pure enjoyment. It's best to warm up at the beginning of every practice session with scales, warm-up exercises,and relatively easy pieces. These will stretch your fingers and hands and help you play with your hands relaxed. (When you play, you should be able to see your finger bones move. Let your hand just hang and move only your fingers.)
5. Remember that it's worth the effort and will make you a much better piano player when your teacher asks you to learn a hard piece. While there are many ways to practice, here's a good one for beginners. First try to sightread the piece without worrying if you make mistakes. Then practice each hand independently. Break the music into segments and learn the right hand part. Learn segment by segment, then connect them together. Keep practicing until you've mastered the right hand play through the entire piece. If you make a mistake start over from the beginning. This might try your patience a bit but it will enable you to get through the entire piece flawlessly. Once you've mastered the right hand, repeat the process with the left hand. Then, repeat the process again, this time for both hands.
6. Take a new piece apart, by learning one or two measures at a time, and going over it again and again. The next day do the same thing with a few other measures, and then include the last measures and play them all, together. By practicing this way, you can spend quality time listening to how they sound, and making sure your fingers know where to go and when. Never learn an entire piece all at once.
7. Try not to repeat your mistakes. Playing the piano is an automatic process like walking (you don't think about each step you take, you just walk). Because of this, past mistakes have a tendency to come back when you play the piece later on. To avoid this, do the following: When you are learning a new piece, break it down into simple parts that you can practice without making a lot of mistakes. And play slowly. For example, practice each hand separately. After you have determined the fingering you are going to follow, play both hands together in short sections. Eventually put the sections together. Do not try to play at normal speed until you are secure in your fingering and notes. Then increase the speed gradually. Play the piece over and over until you memorize it and you can play fluently.
8. Improvise and think notes. "Thinking notes" means that you know every single note that you're playing. While that sounds easy, it can be very hard. Play a piece that you have memorized and can play very well. Now, name every note that you played without looking at piano. Then, take a melody you've heard on TV or somewhere else and try to play it using your ear. Learn to know all the notes that you're playing. While playing by ear is good, it's a lot better if you know every note that you play.

Begginner teething troubles

The most difficult and discouraging time you'll encounter when learning an instrument happens right at the beginning. There's so much to take in that it can seem mind-boggling. There are fingerings to learn that just won't happen naturally and practice can appear to drag. It can seem bad, but don't worry, these are just teething troubles and they'll soon pass.

The Major Problems
Possibly the worst problems you'll encounter will be physical. Your fingers will have the kind of workout they've never experienced before, as you force them into shapes and movements that can seem unnatural. They'll ache, but that's perfectly normal and it will stop quickly. However, make sure you don't overdo things. Take it slowly at the start.
If you play strings, you'll find that the fingertips of your left hand (assuming you play right-handed) will become very sore from pressing down the strings. Again, don't worry; this is perfectly normal. Your fingertips need to harden and develop calluses. Until you get them, don't play for too long at a time; over do it and you can end up bleeding.
Posture can be another big problem. Your teacher will show you the best way to sit in order to play your instrument. Pay attention, because it can save you a lot of backache later. It's all too easy to slump forward in order to see what you're doing, and that's not good. Regardless of your instrument, you need a straight back. That's especially true with wind or brass instruments, where breathing is important.
If you play wind or brass, your lips are going to feel funny for a while as you become used to the embouchure. That's part of the learning process, as your teacher will explain, and as with all the other problems, it will fade as you become more familiar with the instrument.

Other Problems
Although many of the problems you'll face initially are physical, there are the mental aspects too. In the early days of learning an instrument you take on a lot and it's easy to feel overwhelmed.
Break things into small pieces and master them at your own pace. There's no need to rush; in fact, if you try you'll only become more frustrated, as co-ordination takes time to develop, especially on an instrument like piano where the hands work independently.
A good teacher will introduce new things gradually, giving you plenty of time to master what's gone before. Not doing that can greatly affect your confidence. You need to feel assured, especially in the beginning.
Don't practice too much when you're still a novice. It can seem appealing as a way to learn quickly, but all too often the opposite can happen. Frustration can set in when your fingers won't do what you want, and that can lead to you giving up the instrument. Take it slowly. You teacher will advise you on practice times - listen to him.
Accept the fact that you're not going to learn everything at once. You're starting a journey that will take years. Yes, you have to work at it, but it will also give you plenty of satisfaction along the way. There's really no hurry at all.

HOW TO PLAY KEYBOARD

Go back a century or two, and it seemed that many people (especially girls) learnt piano. It was one of those skills that rounded out an education. Today, however, very few play, and the idea of sitting down at a keyboard (usually electronic, which takes up far less space than a real piano) can seem daunting.

The Basics
A full piano keyboard had 88 keys in total (a little over seven octaves) - electronic keyboards will have less. The while keys are whole notes (e.g. C,D,E etc.), the black keys the sharps or flats you'll encounter.
Each octave consists of twelve keys - C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B (not that a sharp can also be a flat, so D sharp can also be E flat, for example). The octave is grouped two black keys then three black keys, making it easy to find C. As a first exercise, play an octave on the white keys, eight keys going up from C to C, starting with the thumb. Hold your arm horizontal above the keys, fingers at 90 degrees. When you've played the first five notes, pass your thumb under to start on the remainder smoothly. Now try it going down, beginning with the little finger, and then passing that over after you've used your thumb.
After you've mastered that, playing smoothly, try it with your left hand on the bass keys. Once you have easy movement up and down the scale in both hands, trying playing an octave using both hands together, your right hand in the treble (above the middle of the keyboard) and your left hand in the bass (below the middle of the keyboard).

The Next Step
Once you can co-ordinate playing up and down an octave with both hands together, it's time to learn a little about chords. A chord is nothing more than several notes put together. They harmonise to make a sound bigger than the individual note. The basic chord is called a triad, because it consists of the notes (the intervals are the root note of the chord, a third, and a fifth). Place your right thumb on C, first finger two white keys higher, and ringer finger two white keys above that - E and G respectively). Press them down together. Move the chord up and down the keyboard; keep the fingers the same distance apart. Now try it with your left hand.
The hard part comes when you try and move the chords up and down the keyboard with both hands. Persevere and practice until you can manage it smoothly, although it might take some time.
You've now mastered the basics of the key of C, which uses only the white keys in front of you.
Now you can try making the hands do different things. Think in 4/4 time - four beats to the bar. Have your left and right hands play a C chord together. But hold it with your left hand, while your right plays each beat of the bar. This is the next step in co-ordinating your hands to be able to play different things. Listen to any keyboard recording and you'll hear that the hands operate independently.

Exercises
The best way to learn is to play regularly, at least half an hour a day if you can. Work on scales in different keys with both hands to get smooth movement in your fingers. A simple music theory book will give you the sharps and flats in different keys.
It's perhaps blindingly obvious, but the more you play, the better you'll become. Practice making chords in different keys, too. Once you've mastered triads, able to finger them easily, move on to chords involving the thumb and three fingers.
Try picking out a melody with your right hand, and putting in appropriate chords at intervals with your left. It takes some work and some trial and error, but when you finally manage it, the feeling is fantastic.

Advancement
Good keyboard players don't need to look at their hands to play. They can feel the spaces between notes. Practice playing without looking. It'll sound awful at first, but gradually you'll become used to it and your confidence will grow.
The best thing you can do to become a better player is learn to read music. It will open up a new world to you, not only of music to play. You can continue to learn "by ear," but your knowledge will never be as great.

Chord substitutions are no more than just playing one chord in place of another. It is good to have options when it comes to playing music or anything you enjoy doing. Music is made fun when your chord vocabulary is not limited to jus a few chords. Expanding your vocabulary of chords enables you to use chords other than basic triads of 3 note.

For example a 1 chord or a beginning and ending chord can be played many ways that will not affect the nature of the song. Let's look at some examples of a chord in C major use at the beginning of any song.

These substitutions are chords that are used in jazz. Chord substitutions are extended chords which consist of the 7^th, 9^th, 11^th, and 13^th. The ^3rd illustrations below are jus an example of popular jazz chord substitutions used to begin or end a song.
